Frequently Asked Questions

Here I have compiled a list of questions and answers about taking an animal to the taxidermist.

What do I need to bring when taking an animal to be mounted?

When you are ready to take your animal to the taxidermist, there are several important things that you need to bring along.

All deer, bobcats, otters, and waterfowl must have proper tags, permits, and/or licenses before they can be checked in. Bobcats and Otters need to have a CITES tag attached.

A deposit (usually 50% of the total price of the mount) must be made before any work can be done on your animal. Arrangements can also be made for you to make payments on your mount, or you can choose to pay the remaining balance when the mount is finished and ready to be picked up.

The most important thing to bring with you is an idea. Think about how you want your animal mounted. Choosing a pose, expression, habitat, and wood base is a thoughtful process and we urge you to take your time and look at photos of your animal, alive and in the wild to give you some ideas. A quick image search online will show you hundreds of pictures of live animals. Another thing to consider is where you are going to place the mount in your home. We need to know if there are any size limits, as well as how high you plan to hang the mount if it is going to be placed on the wall.  We cannot see your idea in your mind, so it is also very helpful if you bring a printed photo or sketch of the pose that you've chosen. Doing this will help us to give you a piece of wildlife art that you can enjoy and admire for years to come!

When will my mount be finished?

Typically mounts are finished within 12 months after drop-off. You will see on your work invoice an estimated completion date which will show the month that your mount is scheduled to be started. Please do not call before the end of that month to check on the progress, as a large volume of phone calls only reduces the work time each day. We take in a limited amount of work each year to avoid being back logged more than 10 months. April is the usual cut-off month where we stop taking in new projects. New work intake resumes in September.

Can I ship an animal to you to be mounted?

If you would like to have your mount done by us, but you live a long distance from Jackson, it is possible to ship your animal and have your finished mount shipped back to you.

We can only recommend shipping your specimen during cold weather to prevent spoilage. Use a 2 to 3 day carrier such as UPS or Fedex (USPS is not recommended for shipping perishables unless you overnight the package).

Freeze your animal into a ball and wrap it with 2 to 3 layers of plastic. You can use thick trash bags or even stretch wrap. Make sure to squeeze the excess air out of the bag. Then pack it into a box with fiberglass or cellulose insulation on all sides. The more you use the better. You can also line the box with pink foam insulation, or if your specimen will fit, ship it inside of a foam cooler with cellulose packed inside.

Here is an example of a properly packaged bobcat. It has been frozen rolled up as small as possible, wrapped in 2 thick trash bags, surrounded by fiberglass insulation, and shipped in a box that is lined with foam insulation:

Keep your package in the freezer until you are ready to ship it. It is best to take it to the drop off location within a few hours before the truck leaves for the day. This is to avoid your package sitting at the store overnight. Only ship on a Monday or Tuesday, during a non-holiday week.

Always contact us prior to shipping any specimens. This will allow us to get your information and to know when the package will arrive. CITES animals (bobcat, lynx, otter, wolves etc) must have their tag attached when shipped. Please include your name, address, and contact number or email in your package. We cannot accept any specimens from outside of the U.S.A.

When your animal arrives we will contact you to discuss the desired pose, taxidermy contract information, and payment method. When your mount is complete, we will email photographs to you and contact you to discuss shipping the finished mount back to you. Once the balance is paid (mount price plus return shipping cost) your mount will be shipped to you via the carrier of your choice. The cost of the return shipping depends mostly on the size of the mount and base. The larger the box, the higher the cost of shipping. Mounts are packaged with care to avoid damage, and all packages are insured.

Finished mounts are shipped inside of a wooden crate. The mount is attached at the bottom so it will not bounce around inside the box during transit.
